Details of Rachael Mipantjiti Lionel


Mother's Country: Donald's Well, near Kenmore Park

Rachael is the third of four generations of Lionel women to work at Ernabella. Rachael's mother is 2015 NATSIAA (Telstras) finalist Yurpiya Lionel and her grandmother is very senior painter Pantjiti Lionel. Rachael was a finalist in the 2016 NATSIAA Awards. Her Telstra Award entry 'Kapi Wankanya' was acquired by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

Rachael was born in Alice Springs in 1976. She attended Ernabella Anangu School. She began painting at Ernabella Arts in 2006 and more recently began working in ceramics studio. She has four children, one of whom is also an emerging ceramic artist, Vennita Lionel.

In late 2015 Rachael also participated in a contemporary jewellery workshop with contemporary jeweller Mel Young at Ernabella as part of the Indigenous Jewellery Project.

In mid-2016 Rachael worked alongside six other Ernabella women potters to create a collaborative ceramics installation for the Indigenous Ceramics Art Award at the Shepparton Art Museum, Victoria in August 2016.
Rachael was shortlisted for the NAtional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2016, and in 2018 she was highly commended in the John Fries Award.

She is a rising star of the Ernabella Arts painting and ceramics studios. Her paintings have been exhibited in Brussels, the USA and around Australia including on Sydney, Darwin, Broome, Melbourne and in recent family exhibition at Turnbridge Gallery featuring three generations of Lionel women.Rachael paints the messages and stories she receives through her dreams.
