This painting is of the hills on Mabel Downs Station called Gilban (the Dreaming place for the Rasp Tailed Goanna). When people passed away, people wanted to know how they passed. They would wrap the body in paperbark and blankets and put the body in this tree, each white stone at the bottom of the tree represents a pastoral station around Warmun; Mabel Downs, Alice Downs, Texas Downs, Lissadel Station, Springvale etc. The body would go into a cave for burial, the caves are in the hills and Shirley has painted these burials. This is Shirley's Grandmothers country, when she visits she calls out to the ancestors and lets them know she is coming to visit and asks them not to bother the visitors or make them sick
