ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : VENETTA YANAWANA: Artwork from the Bungalow
Short St Gallery is excited to present emerging artist Venetta Yanawana. Venetta is a Mangala woman from the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Her mother is the artist Maureen Yanawana and she is related to Yulparija great's, Daniel Walbidi and Lydia Balbal. Still in her twenties, Vanetta has a strong and clear artistic vision, with a dedicate art practice which draws from her Mangala culture and heritage. We believe she is an exciting artist to watch and look forward to working with her to build her career.
Venetta's incredible mark making and vibrant use of colour often depicts the sacred site, Nyangumarta Warran. Venetta has the following to say of her work,'This is Nyangumarta Warran, from the red desert sand to the salty plains of Walyarta. We went to that place when we flew over it - our trip there we saw artefacts in the area and we found new species of marsupials in that area. Lot of places. Old people used to live there too as we saw old artefacts and old grinding stones.'
