COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT : FITZROY CROSSING: BEAUTIFUL ARTWORKS FROM FITZROY CROSSING

Located in the Kimberley, Western Australia, Fitzroy Crossing is fresh water country. It sits between the river and the desert. The artists from the region have varied backgrounds and a unique position in the Kimberley both culturally and environmentally. They have a shared land, history and culture however the diversity of the creative community is unique. Artists who have been painting stories for 30 years about country and culture, sit side by side with young creatives who are exploring modern art practice in new and exciting ways. The result is a heady mix of traditional culture, renderings of station life, a strong connection to colour, uninhibited style and innovative personal stories. Artists from Fitzroy Crossing continue to push boundaries and explore new mediums and styles with great success and aplomb. Recent exhibitions showcase contemporary artwork that incorporates modern mediums and found objects including, a collaboration with Gormon Clothing and outstanding exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Fremantle Art Centre.

Short St Gallery is proud to have supported artists from Mangkaja Arts since its inception in the early 1990’s. Mangkaja is a Walmajarri word for the wet weather shelters erected during wet season and was named by founding member Spider Snell (deceased). The strong visual culture developed in Fitzroy Crossing has supported a large number of important artists who have contributed to Australian Art and the success of the Australian Aboriginal Art movement including, Wakartu Cory Surprise, Janangoo Butcher Cherel, Paji Honeychild Yankarr, Janyka Ivy Nixon, Mawukura Jimmy Nerrimah, Jikila Nada Rawlins, Meryvn Street, Sonia Kurarra and many more.
