COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: TJUKURLA @ SHORT ST

"Painting helps me get rid of the things that are in my mind. It is same like when you're writing things down, you're getting rid of all the words, all the worries, the good moods, the bad moods, healthy and unhealthy. It is all good to clear it from my mind. When I do painting, I think a lot. When I finish it and I look at my painting, I see a big picture of me - all in one place. It is a big landscape. I travel through it and see my worries travel another way, see my happiness. Your thoughts, your everything, your whole body is in the painting. It is like exercising our brain. Remembering. There is something there to help the whole lot," artist Denise Brady, Tjarlirili.

Tjukurla community is located in the NG Lands of Western Australia and Kaltukatjata is in Docker River, Northern Territory. The artists that hail from these communities have significant ties to the Papunya Tula movement. Many artists from the area left Kintore and Kiwirrkura in the 1980's to return to their homelands, eventually establishing Tjarlirili Arts. Tjalirili is a rock-hole of great cultural significance, located north of Tjukurla community. The community is a known source of culturally significant artwork produced by first contact elders such as Nyarapayi Giles, Esther Giles, Tjukupati James, Valmayi Nampitjinpa and Tjawina Porter.
The children of these founding artists have continued the early success and reputation of the community with an innovative approach to composition and creative expression. Artists such as Bob Gibson, Faith Butler, Shelia Giles, Eileen Giles, Denise Brady and Faith Butler's individual and captivating paintings resonate deeply with their passion for country and culture and continue to command the attention of discerning buyers and collectors world wide. All purchases of artwork from Tjarlirli or Kaltukltjara will receive free shipping from now until the end of May.
