COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Gunbalanya

Gunbalanya is situated 300kms east of Darwin in the remote region of Arnhem Land and less than an hour from the world-renowned Kakadu. The studio is named after Injalak Hill which houses some of the most important rock art in the world. With over 200 active members the studio is a hot bed of talented artists immersed and inspired by the culture, country, community, and language of Gunbalanya and Injalak Hill.

The artists are linked by a rich cultural inheritance that includes the Kunwinjku language and the incredibly significant rock art from the Arnhem Land Plateau. This shared culture and history continues to inform Gunbalanya art today; the images seen in the ancient rock art are mirrored in Kunwinjku artists contemporary works. While the narrative and imagery may change depending on stylistic choices, the cultural intricacies have been passed down through generations of storytelling and art. This strong link to history combined with an extraordinary artistic expression create artworks that capture the viewer and honour the artist’s culture and country.
