COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: YUENDUMU

The art centre at Yuendumu was established in 1985 and is located 290km northwest from Alice Springs on the Tanami Road. It supports over 600 people from Yuendumu, Yuelumu, Laramba, Willowra, Alice Springs and Nyirripi in Central Australia. As with many remote art communities, it is not uncommon to find several generations of one family painting side by side. In this way the younger generations are being instructed in the songs, stories and designs of their traditional culture. The very act of creating is a way for the community to keep culture and connection alive and influx. The artists are recognised for their bold use of colour and traditional iconography when painting jukurrpa (dreaming story) using kurawarri (iconographic elements of a painting that hold the story). Today’s paintings tell the story of the artist’s connections to their country, the features of the landscape, the plants and animals that are found there and the creation myth that occurred in the Dreamtime.

Warlukurlangu means ‘belonging to fire’ in the local language, Warlpiri, and the art centre is named after this fire dreaming site west of Yuendumu. The local art community has steadily built a strong national and international profile with art from Yuendumu, featuring in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world. As one of the largest art centres in Australia, Warlukurlangu provides economic empowerment for the Yuendumu community, providing services to its member artists for the production of their arts and crafts as well as contributing funds to community services outside the art centre.
