WALKABOUT: A Janet Dreamer Exhibition
Short St Gallery is honoured to present Walkabout, a vibrant and dynamic collection of artworks celebrating the legacy of well-known Kimberley artist Janet Dreamer. Janet Dreamer was a pioneering remote area Australian artist known for her art practice that was influenced by the vibrant colours and unique wildlife of the Kimberley’s in Western Australia. Her iconic depictions of birds and walkabout captures the essence of the outback with intricate depictions of native avian species in bold, lively hues. Forbes' legacy is marked by her innovative use of colour and form, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounded her. Janet was born in 1959 at Old Flora Valley Station, east of Halls Creek. Growing up on the station, Janet would go hunting and fishing with the old people. After moving to Halls Creek, she began painting the plant foods and bush meats that she grew up with, with a strong focus on Brolgas and water plants.
Walkabout features a collection of intricately detailed paintings inspired by Janet’s’ life and country, that captures the essence and beauty of the natural world in stunning technicolour. Each piece in this exhibition exudes joy and invokes a sense of wonder, delighting viewers with its playful use of colour and attention to the detail. Janet’s legacy as an artist is honoured through this exhibition, serving as a fitting tribute to her creative spirit and enduring passion for capturing the beauty of Australia's unique wildlife through art.
