UMOONA : LONG LIFE: COLLECTIVE ARTWORKS FROM COOBER PEDY

2 - 29 August 2024
Short St Gallery is proud to present Umoona : Long Life, an exhibition celebrating the artists of Coober Pedy, with their recently opened Community Art Centre. This relatively new inception hasn't stopped the artists from racking up multiple accolades in recent years. Their collective desire to paint has had them continue working while the studio was being built. The artwork in Umoona : Long Life is characterised by intricate designs, bold colours and a strong sense of creativity and innovation. This community of artists draws upon their cultural heritage and experiences to create pieces that are not only visually stunning, but envelope layers of meaning and storytelling.

The artists collective stories also combine with some knock-out collaborative pieces. With multiple artists working on a singlular piece, the effect is simply breathtaking and the story that the painting tells gargantuan. Many members of this community have received multiple accolades for their artwork; George Cooley's work has taken centre stage in this year's Art Gallery of South Australia's Biennial "Inner Sanctum"; alongside a number of artists being finalist in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA); and Myra Kunatjayi, Jeannie Minunga, Kay Finn and Mr Cooley listed as finalists in the prestigious Wynne Landscape Award at the Art Gallery of NSW.

The painting collective have indeed carved a path for themselves and their magical artworks to be represented by a successful, long and illustrious career in the art world. Their artistic prowess combined with their art culture, stands as a testament to the power of art for preserving tradition, expressing identity and fostering connection within communities. Short St Gallery invites you to view the stunning exhibition, Umoona : Long Life.
