WE ARE WATI: DESERT MEN

24 July - 15 August 2024

OPENING CAIRNS @ Studio 29, 29 Sheridan St Cairns, Wednesday
24 JULY @ 6PM, ALL WELCOME

A celebration of all things Male. This exhibition showcases the diversity of talent amongst senior men. It explores the way in which men's law is manifest in different desert cultures. The unique story telling of Prince (John) Siddon, sits beside the fantastic, mythical creatures from Fabian Brown. The subtle beauty of the elegant drawings and paintings by Mervyn Street, is contrasted to the classicism of the Spinifex men and iconic massive large statement pieces of Lennard Walker and Simon Hogan. Daniel Walbidi's intensive comprehension of materiality is offset against the optical illusions of Helicopter and Samuel Miller's Tali lines. All transport you to the other realms of Desert life.

This is a unique show that seeks to show the huge strength of men's culture and its powerful presence in Australian Art. We Are Wati, escalates and encapsulates the diversity of masculinity and its important role in all societies but particularly in traditional cultural practice. The sensitivity and creativity of these men is evident in the elegance of the line in many of the works, and the subject matter, with Prince highlighting the suffering of the women in Palestine, to the traditional desert men, celebrating the vital importance of water.

If you are in Cairns you are invited to attend our opening @ Studio 29, 29 Sheridan St Cairns at 6pm on 24th July.
