MARY & MUNA: Muna Kulyuru & Mary Katajuku Pan

1 - 21 September 2023
OPENING NIGHT, 1 SEPTEMBER @ 6PM
ALL WELCOME

Short St Gallery is honoured to present Mary & Muna, showcasing the incredible skill, imagination, and knowledge of two wildly unique and special painters. Muna Kulyuru is a respected artist, teacher and community leader who paints with a vitality and tenderness that communicates the story of Minyma Tjuta Tjukurpa (the story of many Women). Her rich patchwork of lines and marks follows the journey of the women and fire as it travels across the land singing, dancing, and creating country as they go.

'l paint my mother's Country and its stories about many women,' Muna Kulyuru.

Mary Katatjuku Pan is a respected tracker, hunter, and artist in her community. Her playful style brings to life the lands around her ancestral country of Watarru. She layers mediums and marks to recreate the many different animals of her country, creating visually unique iconography that mimics her homeland and captures the viewer’s heart.

'I am painting the story about different animals, like the snake and mouse. A long time ago I used to live at Watarru and I used to work with land management, I was looking after my place and I used to look for tjakura (desert gecko) and now I'm painting about the animals I know,' Mary Pan.

Mary & Muna capture the breadth and beauty of their community and country, simultaneously commenting on the many layers and modes of representation that are available to an artist, and how they choose to communicate their stories and affect the viewer.

Short St Gallery invites you to join us for the Shinju Matsuri festival in opening this exhibition on Friday September 1 @ 6PM, all welcome.
