Graham has painted Namarlbbe, the malevolent spirit who takes on the form of manbelk, the pandanus palm. This spirit palm will hide amongst other manbelk, but its trunk is not round it is flat like a board. There is a ring of pandanus leaves all the way around it. You can tell Namarlbbe is there inside a pandanus grove because even on a windless day the leaves will be rustling. Our women are taught to be wary of passing too close to pandanus when they are pregnant because it is said that Namarlbbe can capture the spirit of the unborn child and keep it trapped. When the child is born it becomes sickly and mad until the Namarlbbe is cut down or burned. Only then is the child's spirit released and it can regain its health.
