Djitnuk is a fishing spirit who can only be found fishing in freshwater billabongs and rivers in Arnhem Land. He often lives in the big paperbark trees that surround the waterways. He can be seen and heard making a special noise at night when hunting for djen (fish) and kuluban (flying fox). Djitnuk is shown in this painting with a djerrk (dilly bag) that he would use to carry his catch and hunting tools in. It is said that on a full moon Djitnuk can become a bit "cheeky" and if you happen to be fishing at his water hole on full moon he might try to scare you because he thinks you are trying to steal all his fish, this being the reason why most binninj (Aboriginal) people wont go fishing on a full moon.
