BININJ DJANG (MEN DREAMING): JOE GUYMALA, SHAUN NAMARMYILK, GRAHAM BADARI, GLEN NAMUNDJA
Past exhibition
Short St Gallery presents Bininj Djang (Men Dreaming) featuring the work of Kunwinjku men, Joe Guymala, Shaun Namarnyilk, Graham Badari and Glen Namundja. The exhibition draws attention to the contemporary art practice of the Kunwinjku people. From the unique iconography and foray into everyday life of Shaun Namarnyilk's work, to the traditional layered rock art style of senior artists such as Graham Badari and Glen Namundja. All the artworks in Bininj Djang have a commonality that is deeply rooted in the animals and spirits of the artist’s culture and ancestry.
Joe Guymala’s artwork uses the traditional Manyilk techniques of grass brushes and ochres. Joe translates these techniques into contemporary striking artworks by creating flow using shape and space. Together the four men have produced an exciting body of work that offers insight into how heritage and tradition affect character and innovation, and vice versa. The resulting artworks offer a spectacular look at the artist at work and provide a unique perspective into Kunwinjku culture.
