Desert Cool: Recent works from Wirrimanu
Short St Gallery is proud to present, Desert Cool, showcasing hot new works from Wirrimanu. Balgo (Wirrimanu) settlement is a diverse group of tribal groups from the edge of the Western Desert. As the ceremonial location for many clans, Balgo is a multicultural community where art is part of everyday life and cultural connection. One of the earliest and most widely recognised art communities of the Kimberley, Balgo artists emerged as key figures in the art world, from as early as the 1980's. The artists powerful canvases exploded onto the scene with their distinct bold desert iconography and colour.
Desert Cool is an insight into the artists recent works and inspirations. The exhibition includes powerful new pieces from senior artists such as Helicopter Tjungurrayi, Jimmy Tchooga, Imelda Gugaman and Pauline Sunfly. It also features the rising talents of emerging stars, such as Stephanie Yukenbarri, who are walking in the steps of their well-known grandparents.
