Sonia Kurarra was born on the banks of the Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) in Noonkoonbah. She began painting in the early 1990’s and has grown over the years into an important and contemporary art maker. Her art practice is layered with marks that intertwine stories mined directly from the riverbank and billabongs of her country. The energy of her work contrasts with the dreamlike aesthetic of her paintings. Equal parts colour, gesture, conscious intention and unconscious emotion, the resultant paintings are a mediation on the sublime.
