SPINIFEX 2022: OPENING AUGUST 12 @ 6PM : ALL WELCOME
Past exhibition
Deep in the Great Victoria Desert lies the community of Tjuntjuntjara and the Spinifex Art Project. The project was started in 1997 as part of a documentation process toward a native title claim with the first paintings done to demonstrate the Spinifex Peoples knowledge and continuous connection to the land. The claim was a success, the project continued, and the artist have become an integral part of the Western Desert art movement. With Spinifex paintings being acquired by major institutions both in Australia and abroad, the artwork of the Tjuntjuntjara people is recognised universally as exceptional.
The powerful landscape of the Western Desert defines and permeates the art from Tjuntjuntjara. The artists paintings map the physical environment and the creation beings who formed it. Renderings of the sandhills, salt lakes, plains and rocky escarpments of this country are interwoven with history, ceremony, and traditional iconography, creating dynamic and diverse compositions which are multi-layered with meaning. Imbued with reverence and cultural knowledge, the paintings invite us to walk with them through this vast Country.
We are honoured to present Spinifex 2022 and invite you to join Short St Gallery and Spinifex Arts Project to open the exhibition on August 12 @ 6pm, ALL WELCOME.
