Tjintu – Sunshine: Featuring Vicki, Rene, Emily
Short St Gallery present Tjintu - Sunshine, featuring new work from renowned artists Vicki Cullinan, Rene Sundown and Emily Cullinan who hail from the remote Anangu Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia.
Vicki Cullinan is one of the regions most recognised painters, regularly featuring in exhibitions and awards across Australia. Her sublime paintings represent her country and often map the sky. As Vicki has said, ‘The sky is the largest presence watching these lands. It holds all our ancestral stories from a long time ago. It watches every day what happens in our community: the chaos, the beauty, the hard times, the laughter. The sky sees and knows everything. It holds all this energy and reflects back on us.’
Rene Sundown’s sought-after paintings utilise a pared back palette and subtle shifts in colour to depict sites of significance in her homelands. Rene draws on her wealth of experience, maintaining and managing the land she lives on with her family, to produce breathtaking artworks that capture the beauty of Australia’s desert regions. Vicki and Rene are joined by respected senior woman Emily Cullinan. Emily’s dynamic paintings are inspired by memories of her childhood where she lived traditionally on country with her parents. Her vibrant use of colour and dense overlays have an exultant energy that rises from the canvas to meet the viewer. We invite you to experience the energy and warmth of Tjintu in the artists' collective works.
