Doris Thomas Australian, Luritja, b. 1948

Doris Thomas was born and grew up at Deep Well Station south of Alice Springs, and her Tjukurrpa is Pigeon Rockhole beside Deep Well Station. Her mother a Luritja speaker was from Docker River way - and her father from Papunya. Her parents both worked at Deep Well Station. Thomas’ whole family then moved to Titjikala Community.

Thomas travelled to Darwin to study and met her husband, with whom she had two children. She is also a grandmother. 

Thomas has experience using many media - fabric painting, carving, pottery and painting. Eventually, living permanently in Alice Springs as a renal patient, she joined Tangentyere Artists in 2010.  Occasionally, Thomas paints in an adapted dot style very much of her own design, but generally she paints rich landscapes of the Country in which she has lived her life, around Deep Well and Titjikala. More recently, Doris has produced intricate paintings (acrylic pen on board) that depict in acute detail her memories, past and present, and feature places like Alice Wells, Mount Charlotte and Titjikala.
