Noreen Heffernan Aistralian, Pitjantjatjara, b. 1970
Noreen Heffernen is a fibre artist belonging to the Pitjantjatjara language and cultural group. She is based in the remote community of Pukatja (Ernabella) in South Australia.
Noreen is part of a prolific lineage of Tjanpi weavers from the Pukatja community including artists like Yuminia Kenta, Yaratji Heffernan and the brilliant Loria Jaylene Heffernan.
Noreen is a weaver with a particular interest in sculptural pieces. Her work features in Tangki - a collaborative animation project which resulted in a short film and accompanying children's book. Noreen enjoys working with bright colours and naive shapes in her sculptural fibre work.
Tjanpi Desert Weavers (Tjanpi meaning 'wild grass') is an award•winning, Indigenous governed and directed social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Women's Council (NPYWC). Tjanpi empowers over 400 women across a 350 000 square km area of the tri-state region of NT, SA and WA to earn an income and remain in their communities on Country.
