Stephanie Yukenbarri Australian, Kukatja, b. 1991
Stephanie is part of a strong painting family. She is the granddaughter of Helicopter Tjungurrayi and Lucy Yukenbarri (deceased). Her mother is Cathy Yukenbarri, and aunties Christine and Imelda Yukenbarri are also esteemed artists.
Born in Derby, Stephanie grew up in Balgo and continues to live there with her three boys and husband. When her kids got older she started working as a Teaching Assistant at Luurnpa Catholic school, occasionally coming to the art centre to paint and learn from her old people. Last year Stephanie was given permission from Helicopter to paint her Grandmother's way, depicting the stories she heard from Lucy Yukenbarri and experimenting with her distinctive paint application.
At the end of 2022 Stephanie travelled to Perth to accept the honour of 'Western Australia's Cultural Living Treasure' award on behalf of her grandfather, she was very proud and happy to see him recognised in this way.
